The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.
(Psalm 23:1)
This verse is again one of the most familiar passages within the entire Bible. The 23rd
Psalm is one that almost all people have been exposed to at some point within their life.
This psalm is also one of the passages that people may consider one of their favorite
passages. The reason that this psalm is a popular and a favorite verse is that the images
within the psalm speak to people in a way that touches them. The image of a shepherd is
one that people connect with. This is also a strange notion, since most of us have never
met or even know a shepherd. At least in this part of the world, the job of shepherd is not
a popular or widespread career choice. Yet, people know that a shepherd is one that cares
for and watches over the flock that they are responsible for.
Hence, when we read ‘the LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want’ it gives off the
understanding of God as the one who is watching over us and caring for us. It gives us
a sense of security in knowing that God loves us so much that he is like a shepherd to us
and that he provides for us, protects us and keeps us safe—just like a shepherd would do
for the animals that he watches.
It is a powerful notion to know that even though we disappoint God and never can live
up to God standards—God still in His abundant love cares for us and treats us as one of
His own. He becomes the Good Shepherd that comes into our lives and is there for us
through the ups and downs of daily life—caring, watching, and protecting us from all
things.
How is it that you experience God as the shepherd of your life?
