The importance, value and spiritual nature of Land
One of the things that I have learned from living in this community is the importance and significance of land. How valuable it is. The importance of keeping land within the family. Within the Bible, land actually plays a very significant role within the whole story of the people of God. Walter Brueggemann (Old Testament scholar) stated in his book on land that ‘The Bible is the story of God’s people with God’s land. Land is one of the promises that God made with His chosen people. We can even see the ongoing effects of land in the Bible in our world today when we read about the war in Gaza. This study we will examine the following ideas:
- Creation and the role of humanity in caring for the land
- The promise of God giving land to His chosen people
- The importance of the location of the promise land and how this impacted Israel and its neighbors
- The use of land in the teachings of Jesus
- What is the idea of a new earth, new Jerusalem in the book of Revelation
- The role of building altars and monuments to mark significant places and events
- How we understand land in our world today and ways it can impact spirituality
Most of us take land for granted, but it is an important asset in our world today. It also played an important role in the Bible and the story of the people of God.
